There Is No Formula for Prayer
As believers, we believe in prayer. We believe that God hears us, that He is able to do the impossible, and that nothing is beyond His power. Yet, sometimes, without even realizing it, we can begin to think there is a formula for prayer—a certain way we must pray, fast, or believe that will guarantee the answer we are hoping for.
This week, I received devastating news: my German Shepherd, Zeke, has cancer.
While waiting for the results of his biopsy, I fasted and prayed. I prayed with faith, believing that the results would come back negative. I believed God could heal him, and I trusted Him to do it.
But the results came back positive.
What followed was even harder the difficult decision of what to do next. We limited with options because there is no chemo or radition for dogs. Do we move forward with amputation? Do we allow the medication to take its course? What is the right decision?
In moments like these, it is easy to wrestle with questions. Did I not pray enough? Did I not have enough faith? Why didn't God answer the way I asked Him to?
But I am reminded that there is no formula for prayer.
God is not a formula to be followed in order to produce the answer we want. He is our Father. He sees what we cannot see, knows what we do not know, and His ways are higher than ours.
Does the biopsy result mean I will stop believing that God can heal Zeke?
Absolutely not.
I still believe in a God who raised Lazarus from the Dead. I believe in the God who healed the blind, who made the lame walk, who calmed storms, and who performed miracle after miracle. I believe that God is still able to heal today.
But I am also learning that faith is not believing that God must answer my prayer in the way I have asked Him to.
Faith is trusting God with the answer.
Sometimes God answers with a miracle. Sometimes He answers through medicine, wisdom, or circumstances we did not expect. Sometimes His answer is simply different from the one we prayed for.
Our prayers are not about controlling the outcome. They are about drawing closer to the One who holds the outcome.
So, as I continue to pray for Zeke and face the decisions ahead, my prayer remains: “Lord, You are able. I believe You can heal him. But above all, I trust You and Your will.”
There may be no formula for the answer to our prayers, but there is a faithful God who hears every one of them.
Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep trusting.
Not because we know exactly how God will answer, but because we know Who we are praying to.
