What Does It Mean to Pick Up the Cross and Follow Jesus?

Scripture: Luke 9:23–24; Galatians 2:20 Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” — Luke 9:23 (NIV)

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to pick up your cross and follow Jesus? Is it simply attending church, reading the Bible, and praying, or is Jesus calling us to something deeper?

Following Jesus means surrendering our own desires, trusting His plans above our own, and choosing obedience even when it is difficult. It means allowing Him to shape our attitudes, our decisions, our relationships, and the way we respond to life's challenges.

But what does this look like in my life and yours?

It may mean choosing to forgive when someone has hurt us, showing love when it is easier to walk away, standing firm in our faith when others disagree, or surrendering a plan we desperately want because we trust God's wisdom more than our own.

Jesus calls us to take up our cross daily. This is not a one-time decision but a daily choice to put Him first. It means asking ourselves, Am I living according to my will, or am I allowing Christ to lead me?

Galatians 2:20 reminds us that our old lives no longer define us. We are called to live by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave Himself for us.

Following Jesus does not promise a life without struggles. Sometimes obedience will cost us comfort, approval, or the security of doing things our own way. Yet we can trust that the One who calls us to follow Him is faithful to walk with us.

A Personal Reflection

Today, I want to ask myself: What am I holding on to that Jesus is asking me to surrender? Is there an area of my life where I know what God is asking me to do, but fear, pride, comfort, or uncertainty is holding me back?

Perhaps picking up my cross begins with a quiet act of obedience that no one else sees. Perhaps it means forgiving someone, letting go of control, speaking truth in love, or trusting God when I cannot see what lies ahead.

The question is not simply whether I believe in Jesus, but whether I am willing to follow Him wherever He leads.

This Week's Challenge

Take a few moments each day to pray: “Lord Jesus, show me what it means to follow You today. Help me surrender my will, trust Your Word, and obey You even when it is difficult. Give me the courage to take up my cross and follow You faithfully. Amen.”
